For quite some while now, I have been using a little Dymo Labelwriter printer to do just that: to print labels to protect the eyes of the staff of the Royal Mail and those of my customers from my almost illegible scrawl on envelopes and parcels. I happen to think that a printed label looks so much classier, and also the package stands a better chance of finding its way to it’s destination.
From bitter experience, I am no longer surprised when hardware – which has been happily running for ages – no longer wants to work after an upgrade, because the software drivers aren’t available – and nor will they be. As operating systems improve (both Win and OSX), some of the older, less-secure elements of the OS are beefed-up, and the older stuff no longer works.
For example, Linda has complained that her Canon scanner no longer works on her Windows 7 laptop – because Canon probably consider it to be obsolete now, and rather than spending money on writing new driver software, Canon would sooner have consumers spend money on new kit. (I have bought a new scanner – but I can tell you it wasn’t a Canon!)
So, back to the Dymo LabelWriter 320. Guess what? Yes, you’re right. It no longer functioned after the Lion upgrade.
Before consigning it to the techno wheely bin alongside the Canon scanner, I thought I would go through the motions of registering my displeasure of the situation to Dymo on their website. By tapping away in the little chat window, I briefly explained the scenario to the ever-so polite Eduardo on the helpdesk, – who replied by asking me for the serial number of the printer. He then replied:
“Unfortunately your printer model is not compatible with Mac OS 10.7 Lion. What I would like to do for you is to exchange your printer for a new model LabelWriter 450 that uses the same labels but it’s compatible with your current MAC OS.“
Am I dreaming? Wow – it appears not!
He then emailed me with instructions on how to return the printer to Dymo – who must know about my handwriting – as the email included a printed postage-paid label for the parcel! The printer is now on it’s way back to be replaced.
Great customer service, or what? Well done Dymo, take a bow!
In the meantime, – to those customers who have ordered prints in the last few days: I’m sorry about the scrawl on the envelope!
UPDATE: Thu 24 August. A brand-new Dymo Labelwriter 450 arrived today – all nicely installed and working after downloading the latest software from the Dymo website! I am so impressed.
